This incident, which required a multi-agency response, highlights the critical need for improved battery sorting, public awareness, and facility-level preparedness to mitigate the growing threat of thermal events in recycling streams.

Rising Incidents Demand Immediate Action on Battery Safety

Lithium-ion batteries, prevalent in consumer electronics, pose a significant fire hazard when improperly disposed of in curbside recycling or general waste, leading to an increasing number of fires at recycling and waste management facilities. The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) reported over 240 fires linked to lithium-ion batteries at U.S. waste facilities in 2023, a substantial increase from previous years.
